One Size Does Not Fit All In Business- tips for aspiring entrepreneurs |
Starting a business can be challenging on the one hand and exciting on the other hand. An aspiring entrepreneur may experience absolute freedom from the rigid world of a 9.00am – 5.00pm job, as well as being accountable to a boss they do not get on with and doing a job they detest. Alongside this feeling of exhilaration, lies the lingering fear of uncertainties. It is not uncommon to find some challenges around making sense of what is involved in starting a business, what products and services to sell and the pathway to building a successful business. Faced with this challenge, what should a typical entrepreneur do to untangle the mental confusion besetting them so that they can confidently move to the next stage of starting a business. Who should an entrepreneur turn to for help and what tools should they used to clarify the right business to pursue.
As a business coach and mentor, I have come across many entrepreneurs who are mentally paralyse about the best line of business to follow. Many find themselves opting for businesses with high profit margin in the belief that they will also enjoy a similar profit margin. In rare occasion some do but in many cases disappointment awaits the entrepreneur that singularly pursue a business with only money as their primary motivator. A lot can be said about the temptation of following the crowd senselessly in pursuit of a venture for which one has no real personal conviction or passion. For the purpose of this article, I simply want to share my thoughts and views about steps entrepreneurs can take to clarify the right business suitable for them particularly as many aspiring entrepreneurs have asked for support in this area, in a bid to starting their own business.
Allow me to digress for a few minutes. I once came across an entrepreneur who was baffled about his lack of success around this business. He is part of a multi-level marketing company in which his income is a based on the number of paying subscriber to a personal development product. This entrepreneur regularly puts up business seminars specifically intended for the recruitment of individuals looking for opportunity to start a part-time business. Inspite of his effort, he was finding it extremely challenging to recruit people into his team. He wondered whether he will be able to achieve the higher status he had hoped for when he joined the company and also cited that very few people are able to make it to the top. As was intrigued by his entire philosophy around his business progress. As a result, I asked a couple of questions of him and soon concluded he was selling a product that was inconsistent to his value system. He was neither committed to personal development nor passionate about helping others to achieve personal development. His motive was simply to make money and naturally, many of his potential clients can spot this aspect of his character. As I listened to him, I had to ask whether he was learning the principles shared in the personal development product he sells. He said “No”. There and then I understood his predicament. He lacks what it takes to make a success in this field and until he comes to terms with this it is more than likely his result will not be any different in the future. Clearly, his talents and personally was suited for another type of business but his singular motive for making big money has lure him into a business line that is built around his weakness. My advise to him was simple; find what you really like and then cut off what you don’t like in your life in pursuit of what you are passionate about.
We are all different in many respects. We are all wired up with different types of talents and gifts which interlink with others in the world. We sometimes make the mistake of undermining those things we do effortless and proficiently, often assuming others can do them as well as we can. Starting and growing a business successfully calls for a respectable amount of skills and right attitude. When we have little or no passion for the work we do, it comes out in one way or the other in our dealings with others. It does not matter what we say in words, our words will not match our actions and people will source things out. It is precisely for this reason an entrepreneur should take very seriously the importance of selecting a line of business that is consistent with their own strengths, as well as their passion.
Going back to the earlier question of what an entrepreneur should do when faced with the challenge of deciding what business line to follow, except in situation where the business owner can hire people who are passionate and competent to do the work, it is always advisable to start of with something you know a lot about and are passionate about. These two factors will put you in good stead. It has been said that passion as a motivator will always outlast money as a motivator. So here are my quick tips to assist you with determining the right business for you as a startup.
• Find out what you know a lot about
• Find out what you are naturally interested about
• Find out what people say you do well consistently
• Find out what your passion is and what generally get your attention.
• Find out how your passion, know-how and
We often forget that business success is built around a foundation of success consciousness and many other successful principle. For the entrepreneur well and without effort
